There is a a real threat of things falling apart for reigning Serie A champions, Inter Milan after their recent result left them with a real possibility of ending the 2024-25 season trophy less, but there is still a chance to salvage something.

More Details

Following their 1-0 home loss to Roma at the weekend and Napoli’s 2-0 win over Torino, the Nerazzurri are now three points behind the Partenopei in Serie A title race and after being knocked out of the Coppa Italia by AC Milan last week Wednesday, meaning that they’ve now lost their third straight match.

It is also the third match in a row in which they failed to score a goal. Hence, the UEFA Champions League might be the only real chance of lifting a trophy, but they will have to navigate a two legged semifinal clash against Barcelona and then face the winner of the other clash between Arsenal and PSG in the final.

Meanwhile, the result wasn’t the only bad thing from their match at the Giuseppe Meazza stadium on Sunday as Benjamin Pavard also limped off with a suspected injury, putting him at risk of the upcoming Champions league match. He’s not the only first team player at risk as his fellow French international, Marcus Thuram is also a doubt after failing to feature against the Giallorossi.

The former Borussia Monchengladbach forward has been out for the last couple of matches due to injury and he’s expected to be involved in partial group training today, with the aim to take part in full group training tomorrow. Then on Wednesday, Simone Inzaghi will decide whether he starts against Barça or not.

In a related development, Serie A refereeing expert Luca Marelli feels Evan Ndicka took a huge risk with his holding of Yann Bisseck in the clash between Inter and Roma. The former referee gave his verdict on the incident on Italian broadcaster DAZN after the match, where he noted that the Ivorian had a hold of his opponent for a long time.

Having conceded in the first half, the Nerazzurri spent much of the second half of the match probing for an opening. Inter had much of the possession, and had it high up the pitch. However, Roma packed their penalty area as they protected their advantage. The Giallorossi were not afraid to get physical inside their own box.

There was one moment in particular that proved to be a real flashpoint as late on in the game, Inter crossed the ball into the box, and Marko Arnautovic headed the ball back towards the goalline, hoping that a teammate could bundle it across. It was Bisseck who got the wrong side of Roma’s Ndicka. The German looked to be the favourite to get to the ball and had he gotten a touch on it, there’s a good chance he would have scored.

However, Ndicka looked to be dragging Bisseck back. The 25-year-old had both arms firmly around the waist of his Inter opposite number. The Inter players appealed furiously for a penalty, or at least for another look from VAR, but the referee waved these appeals away, not seeing enough in the incident to give a penalty and the VAR had a look at the incident.

However, they too did not view the challenge by Ndicka as a foul, but former Serie A referee Luca Marelli argued that the holding goes on for a long time. “It continues from the edge to the centre of the penalty area. Until the moment the ball gets to near Ndicka and Bisseck.” Marelli gave the view that Ndicka “took a huge risk, but it’s an evaluation to be made on the pitch,” he concluded.
