While Barcelona were not in a great financial position to compete for the player, Real Madrid were a different case as they had enough funds to make the transfer happen, but according to their president, Florentino Perez, the Los Blancos didn’t move for him because they already “have the best nine in the world”.

“We have the best nine in the world and we weren’t going to bring in Haaland to have him on the bench, right?” Perez told El Chiringuito. “We have no interest now other than to build the new team with the youngsters we have and some reinforcement.”

That best nine is none other than Karim Benzema, who was their top scorer in all competition last season, as he had his best season yet for the club that has made him the top contender for the coming Ballon d’Or after helping the club to the La Liga title and the UEFA Champions League title.

The Los Blancos were also interested in Kylian Mbappe and they also failed to make the transfer happen, which is largely due to the pressure that the French club brought to bare in convincing the player to stay, as revealed by Perez.

Meanwhile…

Benzema is 34yrs and the club are actively searching for another striker that can act as backup to the French striker. The Los Blancos are ready to cut loose the likes of Luka Jovic and Mariano Diaz and want to bring in an experienced player.

The name of Inter Milan striker, Edin Dzeko has popped up and he fits the bill perfectly. He’s old and will willingly accept the backup role and it looks like he will be discarded by the Nerazzurri soon if their transfer activities go according to plan.

They’re close to signing Paulo Dybala and bringing back Romelu Lukaku on loan from Chelsea and this could push Dzeko to the fringe of the team as they already have Lautaro Martinez and Joaquin Correa while Alexis Sanchez also rumored to be on his way out of the club.
