In what might be the coolest moment in women’s club soccer history, FC Barcelona broke the 23-year-old record for attendance for a women’s football match, with 91,553 fans taking in their Champions League El Clásico game against Real Madrid at Camp Nou.
More Details
The official record had been held by the USWNT for many years, after they played the 1999 World Cup final at the Rose Bowl in front of 90,195 fans. (Unofficially, there are accounts of more than 100,000 fans who watched Mexico play Denmark in Mexico City in 1971).
Wednesday’s game also broke the record for club attendance set in 2019 during a game between Barcelona and Atlético Madrid.
Reports that the match had sold out came swiftly to the venue was announced, but it was unclear whether local COVID-19 protocols would allow enough tickets to be sold to set the new record.

Fans were treated to a delight of a match, which included a half-field chip from Real Madrid’s Claudia Zornoza.
Madrid’s efforts quickly got lost in the shuffle, as the hosts turned the match into a party, scoring three goals within 10 minutes and putting the game fully out of reach for their rivals in a 5-2 win.
As of this writing, DAZN’s Spanish-language broadcast recording on Youtube has 1.1 million views. The English-language broadcast is close behind at 985k. Both live streams of the game peaked at over 100k active viewers.
