The third derby della Madonnina of the 2024-25 season really lived up to expectations in terms of drama and the quality of football on display, except for the scoreline as the two Italian giants played out a 1-1 draw with Milan being the designated home side.

For Inter coach, Simone Inzaghi, he said that his team was ‘magnificent’ for refusing to bow to bad luck and keep fighting until a last-gasp equaliser, but there was a really clear penalty not given. The Nerazzurri were really unlucky in the game as Tijjani Reijnders had given Milan the lead on the stroke of half-time.

They had three goals disallowed for offside and fouls, then hit the same upright three different times in the second half before Stefan de Vrij eventually bundled in from close range at the 93rd minute on an assist from debutant Nicola Zalewski.

“The lads were magnificent, they went above and beyond the call of duty, but there was so much bad luck against us, with three goals disallowed, hitting the upright three times and a really clear penalty not given on Thuram,” Inzaghi told Sky Sport Italia.

He was referring to the sliding tackle on Thuram inside the area, as Strahinja Pavlovic had bundled into the back of the Inter striker moments earlier. “With so many incidents going against us, we still managed to equalise at the 93rd minute.”

“Milan deserve compliments too, as they have intensity and are always dangerous on the counter, so they put in a good performance too. “Clearly, there are regrets, because we always want to win, but despite all those incidents, we didn’t let our heads drop and kept pushing.”

Inter were somewhat sluggish in the first half and never really tested Mike Maignan, but managed to avoid a third consecutive Derby della Madonnina defeat. “We know that Milan are dangerous on the counter, they allowed us 65 per cent possession and we were aware there would be two or three big counter-attacks, as that is their main strength,” continued Inzaghi.

“We had also controlled the first half and could’ve attacked the space a bit better, held back on the runs with a little patience to avoid those offside flags. We kept fighting and deserved more than just a point, but must never forget we were up against a very good team with great players.”

Zalewski came off the bench for his debut just hours after completing the loan with option to buy move from Roma as he was signed as a replacement for the departed Tajon Buchanan and he made an immediate impact with an assist for the De Vrij goal.

“We’re getting some players back now, it will be constant in February, so we must be on our toes. The players who came on have always done well and will be important for the next games too,” Inzaghi continued.

“It can happen, everyone makes mistakes.”“But this is starting to be the fourth or fifth time. I’ve seen them make legal broadcasts about fouls on Inter, now the third or fourth time I’m starting to get angry.” He further added.

The former Lazio manager’s view on the penalty was also corroborated by an expert in a post match analysis. DAZN referee pundit Luca Marelli believed that Inter deserved a penalty kick in the game. There was a controversial incident in the second half.

Thuram sparked an Inter counter-attack but was challenged by Milan defender Pavlovic. The Rossoneri centre-back collided with Thuram’s thigh after entering the Rossoneri’s box and before Theo Hernandez won the ball with a clean sliding tackle.According to Marelli, Theo Hernandez’s tackle was not punishable.

However, the Nerazzurri should still be awarded a penalty kick, as Pavlovic undoubtedly clashed with the Inter striker inside the box. Inter remain second in the Serie A table, two points below leaders Napoli, who play away at Roma later on today.

Meanwhile, Mexican striker Santiago Gimenez was in the stands before formally joining Milan on a permanent transfer from Feyenoord. He already underwent medical tests with the club and will replace Alvaro Morata. He was spotted on the touchline at San Siro alongside club director Geoffrey Moncada and Red Bird advisor Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Also, the new Milan striker watched the warm-up “We had been tracking Gimenez for many months and already looked at him in the summer, but that was a different situation then,” Ibra said before kick-off.“He is ready, I met him today and he’s fired up, can’t wait to start. We are all fired up.” He concluded.
