NWSL Players’ Association To The Rescue On Sophia Smith’s Additional Suspension


The Argentine saw red in his side’s goalless draw against Al Ettifaq on Thursday and has now been sanctioned by the league body.

The 35 year old has been handed a fine of 15,000 Riyals which adds to the automatic suspension incurred from the sending off.

That was Banega’a second sending off this season and his fifth overall in the Saudi Pro League since making his debut in 2020.

Meanwhile…

Gustavo Cuellar, also of Al Shabab has been sanctioned for two games following his face off with an opponent.

Curellar had a face off with with Ettifaq attacker Demarai Gray who also saw red as a result of his involvement in the unsporting action.

Both players have now been suspended for the next two competitive games for their “disgraceful behaviour” during the game.

Both Cuellar and Gray only arrived in Saudi Arabia in the summer of 2023 and are looking to help their different clubs achieve their season goals.
