The 37 year old is the leading scorer in the history of the competition with 141 goals while Lionel Messi is close in second place with 125 goals to his name.
Ronaldo only arrived at Manchester United last summer from Juventus but has now asked the club to allow him leave after just a season back at Old Trafford.
Ronaldo did score 24 goals in all competitions for Manchester United last season but it was an overall underwhelming season for the record English champions who could only finish sixth.
It would be extremely unfair to blame Ronaldo for their failures as it’s well documented that the team was obviously in a state of crisis even before his arrival.
Cascarino has now come out to say that the reason behind his request to leave is because of the fear of Messi overtaking him as the Champions League top scorer of all time.
“Ronaldo is a player, as always, that has an ego,” Cascarino told talkSPORT.
“A lot of it is about him but the teams he’s played in have been successful, so you always go with that as a team player.
“Great, he scores goals, he gets the accolades, he’s one of the greatest that’s ever played the game.
“You can have all that and that’s fine, as long as you’re winning.
“When you don’t win, now you’ve got a problem.
“I said to you off-air, I’m a bit suspicious because he’s got 141 goals in the Champions League. Messi has got 125.
“He doesn’t want to not play Champions League football because he wants to be the greatest Champions League goalscorer of all time and that’s how Ronaldo is made.”
Cristiano Ronaldo won the club’s Sir Matt Busby player of the season as well as the goal of the season with only AMO Salah and Son Heung Min scoring more goals than the Portuguese icon.
Meanwhile…
Manchester United suffered yet another transfer blow as club says they have no intention of selling their player.
The club has been eyeing Barcelona midfielder Frenkie De Jong since the start of the summer and are already planning to launch a bid for the Dutchman.

However, Barcelona president Joan Laporta has revealed that the club are not contemplating selling their player as they look to restructure their wage bill.
He said in his latest public statement: “There are clubs that want him, not just United. We have no intention of selling him, he wants to stay.
“Frenkie is considered as one of the best midfielders in the world by all the experts. We are happy to have him.
“I’m going to do everything I can in my power so that Frenkie stays here, but there’s also a salary issue and that would have to be adjusted.”
This would come as a huge blow for Manchester United boss Erik Ten Hag who has been hoping for a reunion with the midfielder whom he coached during his time at Ajax Amsterdam.
