There’s a special satisfaction that comes from staying up late to watch your team secure a victory, especially when it’s against a formidable opponent.

That’s precisely what Toronto FC fans experienced on Wednesday night as the team clinched a 1-0 win over San Diego, thanks to Theo Corbeanu’s penalty kick in the 20th minute. This was Toronto FC’s inaugural match in San Diego.

This triumph is particularly noteworthy because San Diego have been on an impressive run, winning nine of their last twelve games and only suffering two losses in that span before their match against Toronto FC.

Sean Johnson was a formidable presence in goal for Toronto FC, making one crucial save and contributing to his seventh clean sheet of the season, effectively shutting down a San Diego team that had previously scored 19 goals in six matches.

The match also featured significant VAR drama: San Diego was denied two penalty shouts in the final 10 minutes. While an initial non-call was confirmed by VAR, a seemingly obvious handball by Alonso Coello in the 85th minute was controversially not overturned, much to San Diego’s dismay.

For Toronto FC, the game marked the return of captain Jonathan Osorio, who entered the match with 15 minutes remaining, playing his first minutes since May 31.

Despite playing out of his usual full-back position in midfield, Richie Laryea was a key player for CanMNT. He effectively disrupted San Diego’s offense, frequently dropping back to bolster TFC’s defense, which limited San Diego’s ability to create scoring chances, even with 70% possession.

In the 70th minute, coach Fraser’s decision to substitute Corbeanu likely caused some anxiety among late-night TFC fans.

With their win in San Diego, Toronto FC moved up two spots to 12th place in the Eastern Conference. They now have 21 points, putting them 11 points behind Charlotte FC for the final MLS Cup playoff spot.
