Antonio Conte joins a list of Spurs managers to have been unable to deliver the club’s first trophy since the League Cup triumph fourteen years ago, at least for this season.

The North London club were thrown out by UEFA from the Europa Conference League and couldn’t go all the way in the League Cup before yet again faking to Middlesbrough in the FA Cup which was their only realistic hope for a trophy this season.

The wait for a first trophy continues for Spurs as they’re visibly out of the running for the Premier League title and could see Italian manager Antonio Conte walk out on the club due to lack of ambitions.

Spurs legend and fan Jamie O’Hara frustratingly said after the loss to Boro that he was tired of being a fan and now former Aston Villa captain Gabby Agbonlahor has told the club’s fans to lower their expectations.

The former England striker has compared the North London club to Merseyside club Everton and Saudi owned Newcastle.

Speaking on talkSPORT Breakfast, Agbonlahor said: “I don’t know why Spurs fans feel like they should be winning trophies.

“It’s not like they’re used to winning trophies in the last 20 years, so why should they be winning the FA Cup or the Carabao Cup before Wolves, Aston Villa, Everton or Newcastle?”

Responding to Laura Woods’ comment about having a top coach in Antonio Conte, Agbonlahor replied: “It’s not enough though, is it?

“You’ve got [Heung-min] Son and [Harry] Kane, but in midfield you’ve got [Pierre-Emile] Hojbjerg, [Harry] Winks and none of them are really trying to make that clear-cut pass, none of them are running through to try and get a goal.

“You’re playing five at the back against Middlesbrough, a Championship side. Surely that should be a 4-3-3 and get Steven Bergwijn on the team sheet. Why play such a defensive formation against Middlesbrough?

“For me it’s strange, but maybe Spurs fans just have to get used to it, like Everton.

“Everton haven’t won anything in many years and their fans are used to it.

“Lower expectations, maybe that’s what Spurs fans need to get used to.”

Spurs fans have had to deal with mixed results from their team as a 3-2 victory over champions was followed by a 0-1 loss to Burnley after which they went away to dispatch Leeds United by four unreplied goals, another 0-1 defeat at the hands of Boro in their only hope for a trophy is yet the toughest blow to their current season.

Antonio Conte has however come out to say he believes in the development of the team which is the most important to him so as to have them ready to compete for top honours next year.

He said: “We have to continue to work and to know that there is the opportunity to work and to know that there is the rest of the season.

“There are three months and a half to work, to work very hard and get the best result and for the team to see at the end of the season which is our position in the table.

“There is only this way and for sure we have to continue to work and to improve in many aspects.

“We can improve, but in this moment I’m the last person, I don’t think about myself. When I speak with my players and in my team and say that we have to think about ‘us’, not ‘me’.

“For me no problem and for me there is the desire, the will, the patience to try to continue to work very hard to improve, to make this team more stable than the past, because I think this is the key that can change the situation.”
