According to multiple reports from El Nacional, Manchester City have emerged as the frontrunners to sign Barcelona right-back Sergino Dest, who is expected to be sold by the Catalan giants in January.

Dest joined Barcelona from Ajax in the summer of last year for a fee of around €25 million. However, the strategy did not pan out as planned. During his eighteen-month stay at Camp Nou, the 21-year-old has been unable to persuade the club of his ability.

Under former manager Ronald Koeman, he was a regular, but he never really made a good impression. And under his new coach, Xavi Hernandez, things have grown a lot more difficult for him. Dest’s playing time has decreased under the current management, and after a poor performance against Bayern Munich earlier this month, the club decided to break ways with him.

Barcelona hopes to recoup the €25 million they paid for the USMNT international from his sale. Bayern Munich is reportedly interested in signing him, while AS Roma is also interested. In addition, Manchester City is one of the clubs interested in signing Dest, who is 21 years old.

Manchester City are in the market for reinforcements in the full-back positions as Benjamin Mendy has no future left at the club, while Oleksandr Zinchenko has been linked with an exit in January. As a result, Pep Guardiola is believed to have decided to continue with Joao Cancelo as a left-back permanently and is now looking for reinforcements at right-back to provide cover for Kyle Walker.

Meanwhile…

Barcelona are said to have made contact with Marc Bartra’s representatives. When Xavi was still on the pitch, the former Barca player was a teammate of his. Xavi seemed to have liked their time together and looks back fondly on Bartra’s career progression in the years thereafter.

Since leaving Barcelona, Bartra has built a name for himself at Borussia Dortmund and now Real Betis. Given that the defender’s current contract expires in 18 months, Barca may be able to negotiate a good deal for him.

The 30-year-old is the latest former player to be linked with a return to Barca since Xavi took over. Dani Alves has already rejoined the club for a second spell on a free transfer and will be able to play in January 2022.
