Troy Deeney Names The Chelsea Player Who Is Completely Proving Him Wrong Right Now

Written By Albert Echatah

Troy Deeney acknowledges that since moving to Stamford Bridge, Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella has proven him spectacularly wrong, but he still has serious concerns about goalie Robert Sanchez.

More Details

In the summer of 2022, Chelsea paid £60 million to acquire Spanish full-back Cucurella from Brighton.

When Chelsea brought him to west London, there were questions about his potential fit because Ben Chilwell, an England player, was there.

However, by playing in 12 of Chelsea’s 13 Premier League games this season, Cucurella has capitalised on Chilwell’s injury problems to solidify his position as the team’s starting left-back.

Deeney, a former Premier League striker, acknowledges that Cucurella’s form has “surprised” him and that he wasn’t sure why Chelsea chose to sign the player in 2022.

“He has surprised me,” Deeney stated after selecting Cucurella for his BBC Sport Premier League Team of the Week.

‘I didn’t think he was going to be that good. I also thought: Why did Chelsea buy him when they had Ben Chilwell?

‘But clearly they know more than me and they showed what they can do. He’s doing really well.’

Two other Chelsea players were included in Deeney’s Team of the Week, with midfielder Enzo Fernandez and goalkeeper Sanchez receiving recognition for their contributions to the team’s 3-0 victory over Aston Villa.

Sanchez’s performance against Villa earned him “some credit,” according to the Watford great, but he reaffirmed his opinion that the Spaniard is not good enough to start for Chelsea.
