This timing allows the 31-year-old U.S. national team goalie to prepare for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which the United States will co-host.
For the rest of the 2025 MLS season, Turner will be a Designated Player for the Revolution. In 2026, his contract status will change to a Targeted Allocation Money (TAM)-eligible player.
Matt Turner played for New England from 2016 to 2022. He started his career as an undrafted college player and rose to prominence, eventually being named MLS Goalkeeper of the Year in 2021. His success led to a reported $6 million transfer to the English Premier League club, Arsenal FC.
“When the opportunity arose to bring Matt Turner back to the Revolution, we were glad to act swiftly to welcome one of the most talented players ever to represent the club,” said sporting director Curt Onalfo.

Matt Turner had a successful first run with the New England Revolution. In 111 matches, he helped them win the 2021 MLS Supporters’ Shield with a record-setting 73 points. That same year, he was recognized for his performance by being named an MLS All-Star and a member of the MLS Best XI.
After leaving the Revs, Turner played in seven cup matches for Arsenal before moving to Nottingham Forest. From there, he was loaned to Crystal Palace. He’s now with Lyon, but hasn’t played in a game yet.
