It is no longers news that marauding Portuguese defender, Joao Cancelo has decided to join Spanish giants, Barcelona in this January transfer window from Al Hilal on loan and right before the move, there was another team that was in the running to sign him, former Serie A champions, Inter Milan.

More Details

In the end, the player’s wish prevailed despite the fact that Inter already had an agreement with the Saudi Pro League side long before the Catalans made their offer and now, for the Nerazzurri, the natural option would be to look elsewhere after missing out on their first target.

The main reason why they’re considering a move in the transfer market was the long term injury suffered by Denzel Dumfries but as things stand now, they might not be signing another player for that position this January for a number of reasons even if Dumfries return is being projected to be around March and April.

They’re currently in the Serie A title race, Coppa Italia and of course, playing in the Champions League, hence would require a large squad and ahead of their next game, against Parma, Italian defender, Matteo Darmian should probably return to the squad, even if the next game would be more realistic.

This means that Cristian Chivu will have more options on the right wing as Carlos Augusto and Andy Diouf have also shown that they can play in that position too this season, so there is absolutely no reason to make a panic buy now, rather, the idea is to wait until the summer.

Furthermore, the improvement in performance from Luis Henrique has been encouraging and if he continues in this direction, he might have a longer career at the club than initially thought when he first arrived as the club have reportedly taken him off the transfer market.

According to reports from Sportitalia, Roma have reportedly made an audacious approach for the Inter wingback and the San Siro giants have quickly rejected Roma’s attempt to sign the Brazilian star, showing his rising status within the club after starting for eight straight games so far.

Henrique’s future in Milan has become one of the major talking points following an unenviable first half of the season as the 23-year-old has failed to live up to expectations despite seeing his playing time increase recently mainly due to lack of options in that position.

With Dumfries injured, the former Marseille star has nailed down a spot in the starting lineup even if his performances have been far from impressive. Aware of Hernique’s struggles, Besiktas have recently inquired about him and have been following his situation for months, hoping to snatch him on a cut-price deal.

For Inter, they have no intention of selling their struggling wingback in January and they’ve also turned down Roma’s offer to land Luis Henrique, making it clear they want him to stay at least until the end of the season before making their assessment as Dumfries’ stay at the club beyond this season is not assured either.

By delaying that piece of business until the summer, the club will have a better chance at landing some of their main targets for that position, starting with Atalanta’s Marco Palestra, Genoa’s Brooke Norton-Cuffy and Hellas Verona’s Rafik Belghali and all three are not expected to come cheap.

In a related development, Sassuolo president Giovanni Carnevali has dismissed rumors linking Tarik Muharemovic with a January move to Inter this January and he made the revelation while speaking to DAZN before their game against Juventus on Tuesday.

Recently, Muharemovic is one of the most highly rated young prospects in Serie A, with several clubs closely monitoring his progress, including Inter and Juventus which could start a transfer tug-of-war to sign the 22-year-old center-back but that would likely have to wait until the summer.

Although, the Bianconeri have a clear advantage as they still have some rights over his future but despite the growing interest in the Bosnian’s signature, Sassuolo have no intention of letting him go in January. Given his importance to Fabio Grosso’s defense and team, that’s hardly surprising.

The former Juventus starlet has made 15 Serie A starts this season, establishing himself as Sassuolo’s defensive cornerstone. “We’ve received many inquiries for Muharemovic,” Carnevali confirmed. “We’ve been in contact with several clubs, but we won’t sell him in January.” He further added.

Though a January move is no longer on the cards, the situation could change in the summer with Francesco Acerbi, Darmian, and Stefan de Vrij set to leave in June, Inter will have no choice but to sign a new defender and Muharemovic fits into Inter’s profile in terms of age and long-term potential.
