Written By Onyeka Daniel

In the coming summer transfer window, there could be an opportunity for two Serie A clubs, Lazio and Roma to get their hands on a quality signing for their defense ahead of the 2024-25 season, without having to spend a huge sum in transfer fee, by taking advantage of the free transfer market.

More Details

According to a report from Italy, Joel Matip has reportedly attracted attention from the two Rome-based clubs as he prepares to leave Liverpool on a free transfer this summer. The Cameroonian defender, who also holds an EU passport, has a little over two months left on his contract with the Reds, which isn’t set to be renewed.

Once a key player under Jurgen Klopp, he was forced out of action back in December after suffering a cruciate ligament injury and is now behind Ibrahim Konate and Virgil Van Dijk in the starting lineup. Lazio and Roma are both expected to shake things up in the summer under the guidance of their new coaches, with Igor Tudor and Daniele De Rossi respectively starting their own projects in the Italian capital.

As such, both are set to invest in the summer to try and close the gap. As reported by Corriere della Sera, Matip is gearing up to leave Liverpool on a free transfer in the summer, attracting the attention of both Roma and Lazio, who could open talks with the 32-year-old in the coming weeks.

For both Roman clubs, a deal likely depends on securing European qualification, and the player himself is open to a move too. But given his age, he knows that this could be his last big contract, hence he could also jump at the opportunity to move to Saudi Arabia which has seen an influx of players from Europe and where the pay is definitely better.

EPL side, Brighton have sent scouts to follow emerging talent Loum Tchaouna but will have to fight off clubs across Europe for the Salernitana winger. Things have been difficult for Salernitana this campaign and they’re on the cusp of mathematical relegation to Serie B.

One of the few bright spots for the team this season has been Tchaouna, who has netted five goals and provided four assists across 30 matches. According to a report from Calciomercato, Brighton have sent scouts to keep a close eye on Tchaouna this season as they weigh up a possible summer move for the Salernitana talent, who is expected to cost around €8-10m.

A number of other clubs around Europe, including from the Premier League and Ligue 1, are interested in the 20-year-old winger, giving some competition to the Seagulls. For Brighton, they’ve not had an easy season following the initial success of Roberto De Zerbi following his arrival, having to deal with the difficulties of European competition as well as numerous injuries to key players like Kaoru Mitoma and Solly March, hence, are in need of reinforcements on the wings.
