Two Serie A Giants Propose A Swap Deal To Help Kick Off Their Winter Transfer

The January transfer window is already upon us and with almost two weeks into it, Serie A clubs have been relatively quiet with Lazio being one of the busiest so far and their situation is understandable because they were under ban and were unable to make any signing in the last summer transfer window.

For the likes of Inter Milan and Juventus, they’ve so far failed to make any signings while for reigning Serie A champions, Napoli, they’re currently handicapped as they can’t make any signing unless they sell off a player of equivalent value due to a transfer embargo placed on them recently.

The case is different for AC Milan who have made one signing, picking up German striker, Niclas Füllkrug on loan from West Ham but for all the clubs mentioned, the market is not yet closed and they’re expected to make at least one signing before the window closes at the end of the month.

That change might occur sooner than imagined because according to report from Tuttosport, Juventus are considering offering Milan a loan swap deal involving Federico Gatti and Ruben Loftus-Cheek while a defender swap can’t be ruled out either with Koni De Winter’s name also mentioned.

Consequently, the two clubs could sit down in the coming days to discuss a swap deal between them as the opportunity came up during a meeting involving Juventus coach Luciano Spalletti, CEO Damien Comolli and new sporting director Marco Ottolini on Friday.

Juventus’ priorities in the January window remain a versatile central midfielder and a backup for Kenan Yildiz and for their recently appointed coach, he reportedly reiterated during the meeting that he’d only sign players who can potentially add quality to the team so as not to ruin the balance he’s reached in recent weeks.

Hence, the report claims that Spalletti is an admirer of Loftus-Cheek, who has recently rejected a move to Lazio, regardless of Maurizio Sarri, one of his former coaches. For the former Chelsea star, he wants more playing time as he hopes to be part of the England squad at the 2026 World Cup.

With Massimiliano Allegri often preferring other players in the midfield, Juventus, who are still involved in three competitions, could offer him more opportunities to show his worth and his physicality and versatility would fit Spalletti’s tactics after he replaced Igor Tudor on the bench.

As for Gatti, a move to Milan would be in line with the club’s transfer plan, raising their core Italy contingents while also adding quality players to the squad to bolster their options in central defence in the second part of the 2025-26 season to help their Serie A title push.

Meanwhile, Maximilian Ibrahimovic is following in his father Zlatan’s footsteps by making the move from Milan to Ajax, on loan with option to buy as multiple sources including Sky Sport Italia confirm the agreement is all done and the clubs are exchanging documentation already.

It is going to be a loan with option to buy at the end of the season for €3.5m, while the Rossoneri will retain a percentage of the sell-on fee as the 19-year-old is currently part of the Milan Futuro squad, having been in their youth academy since 2022 until this January.

He scored five goals with four assists in 16 Serie D appearances so far this season, as the Milan youth team was relegated from Serie C at the end of last season and with this move, it means that after 22 years, there will be an Ibrahimovic in the Ajax jersey.

Zlatan wore their jersey from 2001 to 2004, when he first came to Serie A for Juventus and he scored 48 goals and provided 17 assists for Ajax in 110 competitive appearances, but is now a senior advisor for Milan. The hope is that the son can build on and add to the family legacy for the Dutch club.
