UD Almeria Now Worst La Liga Team Of The 21st Century After Loss To Barcelona

Written by Olaleye Oluwadamilola

Almeria has undoubtedly had a very challenging season. Even though they have played 18 matchdays and their performances have greatly improved under new head coach Gaizka Garitano, they have still not won a single La Liga game.

More Details

Going into the winter break, the Andalusians are rooted to the bottom of the table with just five points, coming from five draws. They are three points behind Granada in 19th, and nine points adrift of Cadiz, who sit just outside of the relegation zone (and have played one game less – they take on Real Sociedad on Thursday).

Sport reports that Almeria’s La Liga start to the current campaign is the worst in the twenty-first century, statistically speaking. After MD17, they shared the record (five points) with Elche (2022–23), but following Wednesday’s loss to Barcelona, they now own the record alone because Elche gained a point on MD18 of the previous season.

Almeria is the only team to have a worse start to a La Liga season than Sporting Gijon (1997–98, three points). If they are to avoid relegation, they must win games desperately, though it is becoming less and less likely that this will happen.

Although club management is eager to sign the right player, Ancelotti wants a central defender to be signed in January. It’s possible that Raphael Varane, a well-known face is the target according to reports.

Real Madrid is reportedly thinking about making a winter move for Varane, according to Bild (via MD). The 30-year-old who left Los Blancos to join Manchester United in 2021 is struggling to get consistent playing time at Old Trafford in recent weeks despite being a vital member of the team in the past.

If Varane were to sign, he would probably do so on loan; however, given their own defensive injury problems, it is unclear if Man United will permit this to happen. Real Madrid will monitor the situation for the time being.
