The 2024 UEFA European Championship will get underway with the top teams trading tackles in a bid to dethrone holders, Italy.

Tricky clashes await fans in Group C where 2020 runners up, England will square up against former winners Denmark, with Slovenia and Serbia also laying ambush.

How they qualified

England topped Group C with 20 points from eight games ahead of 2020 champions Italy who also qualified with 14 points. Ukraine (14 points), North Macedonia (8 points), and Malta (0 points) complete the standings.

Two teams in this group, Denmark and Slovenia qualified from Group H.

Denmark topped the table with 22 points from 10 games, tied on points with Slovenia to qualify from a group that also had Finland, Kazakhstan, Northern Ireland and San Marino.

Serbia finished second in Group G with 14 points from eight games, four points short of group winners Hungary where Montenegro, Lithuania and Bulgaria also competed.

Previous Records

Denmark is the only team in this group with a European title.

The Scandinavian side surprisingly won the European title in 1992 and have played in 10 tournaments overall.

England came close to the title in 2020 but fell to Italy who claimed the title on penalties at the expense of Gareth Southgate’s side.

The Three Lions have played 11 European Championships since 1968 without a single title.

For Serbia, they have played six tournaments combined as Yugoslavia or Serbia and Montenegro with this being their first as an independent nation.

In those appearances, two runners-up finish in 1960 and 1968 as Yugoslavia remain their best performance.

This will be the second appearance for Slovenia since their first in 2000 when France emerged champions.

Key players

England captain Harry Kane remain the team’s star player despite injury casting his fitness in doubt ahead of the opening match.

He has scored 63 goals for Southgate’s side and is the team’s all-time leading goal scorer.

His form will be key in potentially leading England to their first-ever European title.

Denmark will rely on Manchester United star Christian Eriksen for inspiration at the tournament.

Eriksen survived a life-threatening career experience during the last European championship but has since recovered to become a key player for the team.

With 41 goals for the national team, all eyes will be on him as he approaches his final championship at 32.

Al Hilal player, Aleksandra Mitovic has been on some goal-scoring form for club and country in this season.

The former Fulham player has scored 58 goals for the national team and is expected to lead the team’s forward line at the tournament.

For Slovenia, Josip Ilicic is the star player with 17 international goals.

The NK Maribor player have the tournament to re-announce himself to the football world following a private issue that almost jeopardized his career.

Predicted Outcomes

Based on players’ strength, pedigree, and history, England is expected to win the group.

Basically, the Three Lions should be in a direct fight for the top spot in the group with Denmark while Serbia and Slovenia are seen as outsiders in the pecking order.
