Written By Onyeka Daniel

It’s proving to be a trying time for English Premier League side, Chelsea as they continue to deal with the consequences of their forced sales with Todd Boehly leading a consortium that took over from Roman Abramovich.

More Details

Last season, they spent huge fee on transfer, but they still missed out on UCL football and have been forced to sell off plenty of their players this summer with as many as 15 players expected to be sold.

In a following development, the Blues have agreed a settlement with UEFA in the region of £8.5million for breaching Financial Fair Play rules that related to incomplete reporting of their finances. The charge came in light of the sale of the football club last May, which saw former owner Roman Abramovich forced to sell amid sanctions levied by the UK government.

That was due to claims that he had ties to Vladimir Putin, which he denies, and such sanctions were made following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. It led to the club being unable to operate in its usual way, especially on a commercial basis and with the inability to sell tickets, until a takeover was complete.

A thorough but quick process was undertaken and eventually, Boehly-Clearlake were chosen as the winning consortium. The huge change did see the new ownership report to UEFA some instances of potential incomplete financial reports, which is what led to the charges.

The period is claimed to be between 2012 and 2019, related to historical transactions and resulted in the settlement being agreed. A statement from UEFA reads: ”With respect to Chelsea FC, the CFCB first chamber concluded that the club breached the UEFA Club licensing and Financial Fair Play regulations as a result of submitting incomplete financial information.

Following the club’s sale in May 2022, the new ownership identified, and proactively reported to UEFA, instances of potentially incomplete finances under the previous ownership. “The reported matters related to historical transactions which took place between 2012 and 2019.

ollowing its assessment, including the applicable statue of limitations, the CFCB first chamber entered into a settlement agreement with the club which has agreed to pay a financial contribution of 10 million euros to full resolve the reported matters.” It puts an end to part of the saga which spilled from the previous regime as the new ownership look to take on a fresh slate from which to work with.

Meanwhile…

Chelsea have received a boost in their bid to sign Brighton midfielder, Moises Caicedo after the player and his agent reportedly made an appeal to the club to lower their demands for the player.

It’s almost the same scenario playing out, just like during the January transfer window when Arsenal tried to sign the player and Brighton refused two offers from the Gunners, after which the player made a passionate appeal to the club on his social media page.

In the end, the move fail3d to happen and the Ecuadorian signed a new deal with Seagulls, with report that they’ve an agreement over sanctioning a move for him when a big club comes knocking.

Now, Brighton have rejected three different bids from Chelsea, with the latest bid rumored to be around €90m plus add-ons. They reportedly want a fee in the excess of €100m, buoyed by the fee that West Ham got for Declan Rice. It’s left to be seen if Brighton would finally shift their stance or if Chelsea would finally pay up the required fee.
