UNC Loses Top NCAA Ranking After Twin Upsets

Reigning NCAA soccer champions North Carolina Tar Heels have tumbled from the No. 1 spot in the national rankings.

This came after opening their 2025 season with back-to-back upset defeats against
Tennessee and Georgia.
In their first full season under head coach Damon Nahas, the Tar Heels became the first defending College Cup winners since 2002 to lose their season opener.

The losses saw UNC plummet to No. 22 in the latest United Soccer Coaches poll.

Meanwhile, Stanford has climbed to the top ranking after a perfect 4–0 start, followed by Tennessee (No. 2) and Duke (No. 3).
UNC will look to rebound when they face another ranked opponent, No. 24 Virginia Tech, on September 11.
