Rafael Nadal made a powerful return after being a set down in his electric first round match at the U.S. Open against wildcard Rinky Hijikata on Tuesday night.

Nadal is now 16-0 in US Open first rounds as he seeks to extend his grand slam titles to 23.

“I was a little bit nervous. First match here in New York after three years, night session, it’s always exciting. Yeah, I went through this tough moment,” admitted Nadal, 20-0 in Grand Slam play in 2022.

“Second match in 50 days more or less. Is a day to just make the job done, and that’s what I did. Happy for that.”

Nadal will face Italian Fabio Fognini on Thursday. Fognini beat Nadal at the 2015 U.S. Open in the Round of 32.

Fabio Fognini had come back from two sets down to beat Aslan Karatsev and reach the 2nd round of the US Open.

Carlos Alcaraz moved to the next round of the US Open after his opponent Beaz retired due to injury.

Alcaraz was 7-5, 7-5, 2-0 up before the incidence.

“No one wants to see the end of a match like this.” said Alcaraz adding:

“I think both players don’t deserve the end like this, but I just say that Sebastian is a great player. He fights until the last ball, so he decided the best thing.”

Cameron Norrie also downed Benoit Paire 6-0, 7-6(1), 6-0 to reach the second round.
