Midfielder Lily Yohannes, who entered the match in the 61st minute, earned the penalty after being fouled in the box shortly after replacing Ally Sentnor.
From the outset, the Americans displayed an aggressive offensive strategy, testing Brazilian goalkeeper Lorena with five shots on target and a total of seven attempts in the first half.
