The United States Women’s National Team (USWNT) avenged their 2-1 loss to Portugal a few days earlier with a commanding 3-1 victory in their second international friendly at the Pratt & Whitney Stadium, East Hartford, on Sunday.
More Details
Before kickoff, the team honoured the illustrious career of former goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher, celebrating her contributions to the national side.
The Americans got off to a flying start, as Olivia Moultrie opened the scoring just 44 seconds into the game with a superb left-footed half-volley inside the box.
Portugal quickly responded through Jessica Silva, who netted the equaliser, but Moultrie restored the USWNT’s lead in the 10th minute, finishing neatly from Jaedyn Shaw’s assist to complete her brace.
In the second half, Samantha Coffey sealed the win for Emma Hayes’ side with a well-timed header in the 82nd minute, connecting perfectly with Allyson Sentnor’s cross.
The result gave the former world champions a strong response following their earlier setback against the same opponents.
