More Details
The United States Women’s National Team (USWNT) had previously secured a 2-0 victory in their first match held in Inglewood, California, on April 5, but Brazil clinched the second match with a dramatic late goal during stoppage time.
Catarina Macario, a forward, scored the only goal for the U.S. just 34 seconds into the game, marking it as the seventh fastest goal from the start in USWNT history.
The goal was set up when forward Alyssa Thompson executed a give-and-go with Macario near midfield before sprinting into the Brazilian penalty area.
Thompson’s shot was blocked during a collision with Brazilian goalkeeper Natascha, who failed to secure the ball.
Macario seized the opportunity, converting the loose ball from close range for an ideal beginning.

For Macario, a Stanford graduate, this goal marked her 10th in her USWNT career and was scored at the same venue where she played her final collegiate match, contributing to the Cardinal’s NCAA championship victory in 2019.
Additionally, it was her first goal against Brazil, the country of her birth, before she relocated to the United States at the age of 12.
Brazilian forward Kerolin equalized in the 24th minute with a well-placed shot following an assist from Gio.
However, neither team managed to score again until stoppage time, when Brazil launched a counterattack after a U.S. free kick. Luany sprinted down the right side and delivered a pass across the goal for an unmarked Amanda Gutierres to finish.

This victory marked Brazil’s fourth win against the U.S. and their first since 2014.
At 26 years old, Macario was the second oldest player in a starting lineup that averaged just 17.9 caps, the lowest for any USWNT starting XI in the past 24 years. Center-back Emily Sonnett, the oldest player on the field, had more caps (107) than the total of the other starters combined (81).
Sonnett and midfielder Korbin Albert were the only starters in this match who had previously faced Brazil in the gold medal match at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
