USWNT Makes Another White House Visit

Written by Oluwaseun Oyediji
Midge Purce, Kelley O’Hara, and Megan Rapinoe (via Zoom) made their second visit to the White House in as many years this week.
More Details
The United States Women’s National Team (USWNT) players spoke with Vice President Kamala Harris on the topic of Equal Pay, as the White House observed Equal Pay Day on Wednesday.
They were also joined by ’99ers Briana Scurry and Julie Foudy, along with United States Soccer Federation (USSF) President (and former USWNT player) Cindy Parlow Cone.
The visit comes in the aftermath of the team’s settlement of their equal-pay lawsuit last month.

Purce and Rapinoe’s visit to the White House last year came with a more combative tone.
Cone’s presence this time indicates a new level of comfort with the federation being involved in the fight for gender equality.

The fight for equality from the early era of the USWNT was described as a “machete,” requiring bold broad strokes to make those in power pay attention.
Purce expanded on this line of thinking, describing her work with the team as something closer to scissors making small, more precise incisions as the USWNT continues to progress.
