After another bombshell report in the Washington Post, this time about former Red Stars manager, Rory Dames’s alleged sexual misconduct as a youth coach, a number of notable United States (US) Women’s National Team (USWNT) players signed an open letter to Cindy Parlow Cone and Carlos Cordeiro demanding accountability.
More Details…
Cone and Cordeiro are both in the running for President of the U.S. Soccer Federation, and the players addressed each of them individually in the letter.
Cone’s promises to “vigorously investigate reported conduct, gain a full and frank understanding of the factors that allowed it to happen, share the results of this work, and take the steps to prevent this abhorrent behavior from happening again” were called into question by the players, who are looking for accountability.
“In both of your campaigns to be re-elected Presidents of USSF, you discussed the need to look forward, not back,” the letter reads. “But without true accountability for the past, there is no promising future.”

In another fight for accountability, Chicago Red Stars owner Arnim Whisler made his first public statement following the resignation of Dames in November.
“I have spoken with many players and the experiences they have told me about are unacceptable. I am further heartbroken this week after learning about the allegations from former youth players that involved the Red Stars former coach at the youth club he founded,” the open letter states.
Whisler points to a newly instated advisory board and the appointment of associate general manager Michelle Lomnicki as failsafes against future abuse within the club.
Frustrations in Chicago appear to be boiling over, as Whisler continues to steer the club into the future despite many questions about how the resignation of Dames was handled and what exactly ownership knew about his past.
The team still does not have a head coach, and the sheer amount of time it took between the initial allegations against Dames last November and Whisler’s statement on Thursday is sure to raise more eyebrows.
