It’s finally USWNT World Cup match day in the States and not a moment too soon.
More Details
The USWNT take on Vietnam, officially kicking off their quest for a third straight title.
Vietnam is 32nd in the FIFA rankings, the lowest in Group E.
This is the team’s first trip to the World Cup and the first time they will be facing the U.S. in their history.
“Vietnam is a little bit of a wild card,“ Lynn Williams told reporters this week.
“But they’ve had some good results recently against some great opponents, so you can’t take them for granted.”
Vietnam recently kept things close against Germany in a 2-1 loss but also suffered a blowout 9-0 loss to Spain.
Meanwhile…
Two hours before Australia’s World Cup opener, superstar Sam Kerr announced she would miss at least the first two group-stage games with a calf injury.
“I wanted to share this with everyone so there is no distraction from us doing what we came here to achieve,” the striker wrote on social media.

In Kerr’s absence, Australia’s opener against Ireland was a chippy affair that threatened to end in a scoreless draw.
The Matildas’ breakthrough came after halftime, in the form of a penalty deftly taken by defender Steph Catley to win the match 1-0.
“Of course, I would have loved to have been out there tonight but I can’t wait to be a part of this amazing journey which starts now,” wrote Kerr, who held back emotions on the sideline in front of a record home crowd.
She could return for Australia’s final group-stage match against Canada.
