As more information emerges about the conflict within the Spanish women’s national team, United States Women’s National Team (USWNT) stars are lending their voices toward the players’ cause.

More Details

Fifteen players have been called out by RFEF, Spain’s federation, for what it referred to as a refusal to play so long as coach Jorge Vilda remains in his position.

“The RFEF is not going to allow the players to question the continuity of the national coach and his coaching staff, since making those decisions does not fall within their powers,” the federation said.

On Friday, star Spanish midfielder Alexia Putellas pushed back on RFEF’s characterization of events.

She said: “We have never asked for the dismissal of the coach as has been commented,” but did ask for “a firm commitment to a professional project.”

The players assert they did not resign from the team but merely asked that they not be called up until their concerns about physical and emotional health were addressed.

Vilda has yet to manage the team to a major international trophy. He is also the son of Angel Vilda, the Head of the Women’s Department in RFEF.

The USWNT, fresh off their own conflict with their federation, expressed their support.

“I don’t know the private details, but if 15 of the best players in the world wanted to share feedback, I’d respect them enough as people and players to take their concerns seriously,” Becky Sauerbrunn said.

“This is so hard to watch knowing the federation is throwing their players under the bus for players asking for better protection, treatment, and professionalism,” Alex Morgan also said in a post on Twitter.

The USWNT is scheduled to play Spain on October 11, and opinions differ on the best way for the team to show solidarity with the situation in Spain still evolving.
