UWCL: Lyon Survive Levante's Storm To Qualify For Champions League Group Stage

French D1 Arkema side, Olympique Lyonnais (Lyon) qualified for the group stage of the 2021/2022 UEFA Women’s Champions League (UWCL) after a 2-1 victory over Levante UD in the return leg of its Round 2 tie at the Groupama Academy Stadium, Décines-Charpieu.

It was expected to be a close encounter after both sides recorded big wins in the league last week.
Lyon thrashed Saint Etienne 6-0 while Levante UD pummeled Real Madrid 4-0.

After a goalless first half, Amel Majri hits a free-kick that nobody touches and beats Levante UD goalkeeper, Maria Lopez Valenzuela in the 60th minute for the first goal of the game.

Three minutes later, Amel Majri turned provider for Catarina Macario who converted Lyon’s second goal.

Aldana Cometti pulled a goal back for Levante UD but the goal turned to be a mere consolation as Lyon progressed to the group stage of the Champions League after a 4-2 aggregate score-line.

Lyon will next face Dijon in the league on September 12 ahead of the Champions League group stage draw while Levante UD will now focus on the league with a clash with Sevilla in a bid to return to the Champions League next season.

Servette Geneve FC of Switzerland and Køge of Denmark also made it to the group stage of the 2021/2022 UEFA Women’s Champions League after victories over Glasgow City (Scotland) and Sparta Prague (Czech Republic) respectively.

Goals from Equatorial Guinea’s Jade Boho Sayo and Sandy Mäendly canceled out Priscilla Chinchilla’s 14th-minute strike for Glasgow City.

Cecilie Floe and Cornelia Kramer scored two second-half goals to lift Køge to a 2-0 triumph over Sparta Prague.
