Osimhen admitted that the painful memories of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying playoffs are still fresh but believes the AFCON presents an opportunity for redemption for both himself and the team.

“With the help of my teammates and myself, the coach has been doing an amazing job since camp opened,” Osimhen said.

“The spirit in training has been very high and the sessions have been really intense.”

The Napoli forward stressed that while setbacks remain part of the team’s recent history, the focus is firmly on the present challenge.

“For us, the last time was disappointing and that’s life. We know those memories linger,” he said. “But we want to use this opportunity to send a clear message out there that we still have it in us.”

Osimhen also expressed strong belief in the current squad and technical crew as Nigeria prepares for their opening fixture.

“I believe so much in this squad, the coaching staff, and everyone around this team,” he added. “For us, it’s all about now. We are going to war on Tuesday. We will give everything and not underrate any team.”

Acknowledging the competitiveness of the tournament, the 2023 African Footballer of the Year nominee noted that Nigeria must be at their best to achieve success.

“There are so many favourites in this tournament, so we are going to give our all to realise the dream of winning the AFCON,” Osimhen concluded. “It’s not going to be easy.”

Nigeria will be aiming to channel that determination into a strong start as they chase continental glory in Morocco.
