With Inter Milan, AC Milan, Juventus and Atalanta all dropping points, all eyes were on Napoli to produce a great performance with a result to match but they couldn’t do so with Cagliari holding them to a 1-1 draw.
Cagliari started on the front foot, settling into the match quicker and having the majority of the early possession. They had a few chances in the first half before the Partenopei finally took the game to the host.
The first half of the game ended goalless with decent goal scoring opportunities to both teams.
The Rossoblu started the other half with a better intention and they were rewarded in the 58th minute, when Pereiro scored a speculative long shot. Ospina could and should have done better, looking ashamed as Cagliari raced off in celebration.
Napoli as well reacted to the goal but to no avail as their half chances keep dropping on dry land. However, Osimhen in the 85th minute headed home a Mario Rui cross to tie things up in Sardinia, securing an important point for the title race.
The draw put Napoli on same points (54) with Inter Milan who occupy the second spot, two points behind table toppers AC Milan.
Meanwhile…
Napoli coach Luciano Spalletti has accepted the outcome of the result in good but believes his team could have done better if some members of the team are fully fit.

Goal scorer Victor Osimhen according to Spalletti passed a late fitness test to make the game.
“It was a complicated game for us, Cagliari deserved more. In fact, we deserved something less. We never took the game into our own hands, even though we had more possession. They wanted to play this game here and we wanted to play another.” Spalletti said.
“We have to be happy with the result because it happens to everyone after these Europa League games. We did too little in terms of quality. Don’t say it’s everyone any more, every time it happens in two days we lose 4-5 players.
“It was good of Osimhen to be available at the last second, he was at risk of not being in the game.”
