WAFCON 2022: Atlas, Teranga Lionesses Through To The Quarter Finals

Host, Atlas Lionesses of Morocco, and the Teranga Lionesses of Senegal have qualified for the Quarter Finals of the 2022 TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after winning their second Group A games against Uganda and Burkina Faso respectively on Tuesday.

Morocco defeated Uganda 3-1 to make it out of the group stage for the first time in the team’s history as far as the tournament is concerned.
The Atlas Lionesses opened the scoring from the spot-kick after a foul by Margret Namirimu on Rosella Annie Ayane in the box before the 14th minute of play.
Rosella Annie Ayane stepped up to convert the resulting penalty into the bottom left corner for Morocco’s first goal.
The Crested Cranes of Uganda equalised in the 32nd minute when Sumaya Komuntale dispatched a left-footed free-kick which beat Khadija Er-Rmichi in goal for Morocco.

In the 68th minute, the Moroccans restored their lead as Nesrryne El Chad headed into the back of the net a sumptuously delivered free kick by the captain, Ghizlane Chebbak.
After a review by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), Morocco earned another penalty kick as Ugandan goal scorer, Sumaya Komuntale committed a foul on Rosella Annie Ayane and was sent off.
Ghizlane Chebbak scored the resulting penalty kick in the 84th minute as she wrong-footed Ruth Aturo in goal for Uganda.

The Teranga Lionesses of Senegal edged Burkina Faso 1-0 to join Morocco in the quarter-final.

Alimata Belem committed a foul in the box before the 84th minute leading to a penalty.
Korka Fall in the 84th minute slotted the penalty into the bottom left corner to score the deciding goal for Senegal.
Senegal and Morocco with a maximum of six points from two group games have qualified for the quarter-final and will both meet in the final group game on July 8 to determine the group winners.
Uganda and Burkina Faso will also trade tackles in the final group game in a bid to get one of the two best third-placed finishes for a place in the quarter-final.
