WAFWOS Stands With Jess Carter Following Racial Abuse During Euro 2025
Written by Oluwaseun Oyediji
WAFWOS (Women and Football Without Stereotypes) strongly condemns the racial abuse directed at England and Lionesses defender Jess Carter throughout the UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 tournament.
More Details
In a statement shared on social media, Carter revealed that she has been subjected to repeated racist attacks online since the beginning of the tournament.
She announced she would be stepping back from her personal platforms to safeguard her mental health and focus on supporting her teammates ahead of England’s semi-final.
“Whilst I feel every fan is entitled to their own opinion on performance and result, I don’t agree or think it’s ok to target someone’s appearance or race,” Carter stated. “Hopefully speaking out will make the people writing this abuse think twice so that others won’t have to deal with it.”
WAFWOS unequivocally supports Jess Carter in her stance and commends her for speaking out publicly against this vile behavior.

No athlete — or any person — should be subjected to abuse, online or otherwise, because of the color of their skin. The strength, composure, and grace she has shown in the face of such hateful attacks is both heartbreaking and inspiring.
We also recognize and support the collective response from the England squad and FA, who have reaffirmed their stance against racism.
The Lionesses have announced a decision to stand before kick-off rather than take the knee — a powerful shift meant to signal the need for new approaches in the fight against racism in football.

“It is not right that while we are representing our country, some of us are treated differently simply because of the colour of our skin,” England’s team statement read.
WAFWOS joins calls for social media platforms, governing bodies, and law enforcement to take swift and firm action against those responsible. Words of solidarity must be met with action and accountability.
Jess Carter, and every player representing their country, deserves to play without fear of hate, harassment, or discrimination.
