Montpellier striker, Wahbri Khazri, Nantes FC star, Ludovic Blas are leading a host of other Ligue 1 players to be sanctioned by French disciplinary committee over breach of the sports betting rule in France.

More Details

The French League governing body’s disciplinary committee recently unveiled a list of players and coaches from professional clubs sanctioned for breaching the ban on sports betting. This ban is laid down in the French Sports Code and the regulations of the French Football Federation (FFF) and the LFP as reported today by leading French media outlet, L’Équipe.

These offences were identified through a cross-check of files, carried out with the collaboration of the National Online Gaming Authority (ANJ) and the French National Lottery (FDJ).

The Commission took the opportunity to stress that “professional football players are formally prohibited from betting on football competitions, whether national or international”. These sanctions will come into force at midnight on Tuesday 27 June.

Khazri was fined €3,000, while Nantes attacking midfielder Blas fined €2,000. Another FC Nantes player, substitute goalkeeper Rémy Descamps, received a one-match suspension (suspended) and two suspended matches, as well as a €1,000 fine (suspended) as the two whose fines and punishment weighs more than the other 30 individuals to be sanctioned.

Also, Jean-Charles Castelletto, also from Nantes, received a formal warning, as did Layvin Kurzawa, currently under contract with PSG. Christopher Rocchia, a former Marseille player currently playing for Dijon in Ligue 2, was fined €1,500 and suspended for one match.

Meanwhile…

According to Foot Mercato, Lille OSC will try everything to retain Everton midfielder André Gomes having spent last season on loan with Les Dogues under the stewardship of compatriot Paulo Fonseca.

He had a successful season-long loan with Lille last season, helping the club to a fifth-place finish in Ligue 1 and producing one of the best individual outputs in terms of goals and assists.

As a result, the club will play in the UEFA Europa Conference League next season. However, there wasn’t an option to make the move permanent included in the contract. Gomes has therefore returned to Everton, who once again narrowly avoided relegation from the Premier League.

Olympique Lyon duo, Rayan Cherki and Saël Kumbedi have made the Golden Boy top 100 nominees.

Last season, Castello Lukeba was among the finalists, but he did not make the list this year. Another absence is that of Bradley Barcola, who was the top assist provider for OL this season.

This season, OL is represented by Rayan Cherki and Saël Kumbedi, who arrived this summer, took advantage of Malo Gusto’s injuries to establish himself on the right side. He played a total of 20 matches, including 14 as a starter.

As for Rayan Cherki, the 2022/23 season allowed him to gain momentum. Often a substitute under Peter Bosz, the arrival of Laurent Blanc enabled him to establish himself in the Lyon midfield.

In the second half of the season, he was frequently named as a starter in his preferred position in central midfield.

When the list was announced, each player was assigned a rating, and the rankings were based on these ratings. Every month, the ratings will change, and 20 players will be removed from the list.

Currently, Saël Kumbedi is in 57th place. Rayan Cherki, on the other hand, is the highest-ranked Ligue 1 player at 13th place.
