Chelsea asserted control from the opening whistle, nearly scoring within two minutes when Cole Palmer missed the target following a brilliant setup by Moisés Caicedo. While Morgan Rogers provided a few sparks for the visitors, Chelsea’s defense—led by a well-timed tackle from Benoît Badiashile—largely kept Villa at bay.
The hosts continued to pressure, with Enzo Fernández and the active Palmer seeing chances go begging. Even when Chelsea found a way through, Emiliano Martínez proved difficult to beat, notably denying a clever flick from João Pedro.
Matty Cash received a yellow card for a foul on Alejandro Garnacho, ruling him out of the upcoming fixture against Arsenal. Chelsea finally converted their dominance into a lead in the 37th minute. Reece James delivered a precise corner that João Pedro flicked home to make it 1-0.
Heading into halftime, Villa looked second-best, with a weak John McGinn free-kick summarizing their struggles to test the Chelsea goal.
The match intensified after the break as both sides traded chances. Morgan Rogers and Emiliano Buendía were kept out by the Chelsea defense, while at the other end, Emiliano Martínez produced a spectacular save to deny Reece James.

After Alejandro Garnacho narrowly missed the target, Unai Emery revitalized Villa with a triple substitution near the 60-minute mark. The impact was almost immediate; Ollie Watkins set up Boubacar Kamara, who was thwarted by a quick-thinking Robert Sánchez.
However, Watkins eventually found the breakthrough, scoring a scrappy goal after his initial effort rebounded off the keeper and back into the net. Sánchez remained busy, parrying a powerful strike from Ian Maatsen, which prompted Chelsea to make a triple change of their own.
Despite the late-game drama—including the frustration of Kamara earning a booking that rules him out of the Arsenal clash—Watkins sealed the result. His clinical 84th-minute header secured Aston Villa’s 11th straight win, keeping them just three points off the top of the Premier League. For Chelsea, the loss ended a four-match unbeaten streak and left them sitting in fifth place.
