Even though it wasn’t the desired result for Atalanta and a blow to their Serie A title aspirations this season, the 0-0 draw against Cagliari at the Gewiss Stadium had a little bit of positive for the Bergamo club as Gian Piero Gasperini reached 600th Serie A point in charge of the club.

This means that he is now second place overall for coaches with the most Serie A points with a single club. Gasperini’s tally of 600 points with Atalanta is second only to Massimiliano Allegri’s record of 663 points from his two spells with Juventus. So, Gasperini needs 64 points to overtake Allegri.

This is on the assumption that the latter is not re-appointed for a third Juventus spell and that is feasibly achievable before the end of next season. There are still 13 league matches remaining of the 2024-25 campaign, which means a maximum of 39 points to play for.

Given that Atalanta have achieved 60+ points in seven of the last eight Serie A seasons, it is not unrealistic that Gasperini overtakes Allegri midway through the 2025-26 campaign. Gasp is currently eight place in terms of overall points achieved by Serie A coaches with 941 overall.

He is likely to catch Carlo Ancelotti, in seventh with 950 points, before the end of the current campaign. Carlo Mazzone is in sixth with 970 points, which means that Atalanta would have to win all 13 of their remaining matches if Gasperini is to catch up with him this season. Luciano Spalletti is fifth overall with 996 points.

Allegri in fourth with 1,012, Nils Liedholm in third with 1,038, Nereo Rocco in second with 1,159 and Giovanni Trappatoni in first with 1,264. For Gasperini, he has admitted that he needs a strong team available for the upcoming Champions League play-off second leg against Club Brugge, hence his rotations in the goalless draw against Cagliari.

Furthermore, he insisted that Atalanta ‘still believe’ in a Scudetto challenge despite being held at home today. For the manager, he admitted that Atalanta have a ‘numerical difficulty’ at the moment, with Ademola Lookman, Gianluca Scamacca, Daniel Maldini, Sead Kolasinac, Odillon Kossounou and Giorgio Scalvini all currently unavailable through injury.

He also rested Charles De Ketelaere, Marten De Roon, Ederson, Davide Zappacosta, Raoul Bellanova and Berat Djimsiti for the 0-0 draw with Cagliari. Discussing his team selection with DAZN after full-time, Gasperini said: “We could have got the points in this way, we have a bit of a numerical difficulty in attack at this time.”

“We find it harder to win games, especially at home despite dominating for a long time, then we get this result. The quality of the game was very good, we have to acknowledge that we are like this sometimes, we struggle to materialise in this type of game.

“We came out of this month in this way, and we’re struggling a little more, but the team will slowly but surely finish the second half of the season well.” The coach was also asked if he plans on watching either Lazio-Napoli or Juventus-Inter over the next two days. He replied with a statement of intent:

“For the Scudetto? We believe in it, and we will try to do everything to win it.” He then hinted that his rotated team was because of the upcoming Champions League match against Club Brugge at the Gewiss Stadium too. “We care a lot, especially after how the first leg ended.

“They have technical and athletic qualities. We have to score goals. Winning the game is not enough, and it’s become complicated with that ending. We have to try and do everything to get through the round, a round that on the eve of the match was within our reach.” He further added.
