Victor Osimhen fired Napoli ahead in the 11th minute when he converted Piotr Zielinski’s cross from the right. And while Cagliari started growing in confidence in the second half, Diego Godin in the box brought down goal scorer Osimhen. Lorenzo Insigne stepped up, converted the penalty and put the game to bed.

Despite all of these Napoli coach Luciano Spalletti will not want his players to see any of it as their best and now demand improvement in the attack.

“We have already lost. We have already lost in previous years and know how that feels. We lost to Benevento during a friendly this season, because whenever we wear the Napoli jersey, that is an official match,” Spalletti told DAZN.

“What we need to improve is the final third, as we tend to reach the edge of the box and then not break through. That is something we have to work on, transforming all this possession into clear-cut shots on target.”

The Sunday match against Cagliari also sees Napoli captain Lorenzo Insigne made is 403th appearance in the colour of the Napoli jersey and was presented with a shirt, numbered 400 on the back from the club’s vice president Edoardo De Laurentiis.

Insigne made his 400th appearance against Juventus on 11 September and currently sits fourth in the club’s all-time appearance ranks, behind Marek Hamsik (520), Giuseppe Bruscolotti (511) and Antonio Juliano (505).
