More Details
Manchester City are pursuing Porto midfielder Nico Gonzalez and are aiming to finalize the transfer before the transfer deadline. While discussions between the two clubs are in progress, City are hesitant to trigger Gonzalez’s £50 million release clause.
Porto, however, are holding firm on their €60 million (£52 million) release clause, a figure that would entitle Barcelona to a significant portion of the fee (between €20.8 million and €24 million) due to a sell-on clause.

Nico Gonzalez’s time at Barcelona began promisingly, but he struggled to maintain a consistent place in the starting lineup under manager Xavi Hernandez. Following a loan spell at Valencia, Gonzalez was ultimately sold to Porto for €8.44 million. As part of the transfer agreement, Barcelona retained a 40% sell-on clause, though it remains unclear whether this applies to 40% of any future profit from a sale, or 40% of the entire transfer fee.

Despite Porto’s stance, TBR Football reports that Gonzalez has expressed his desire to join Manchester City, adding pressure to the negotiations as the clock runs down.
Following the loss of Rodri Hernandez, Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola reportedly attempted to recruit veteran midfielder Sergio Busquets for the remainder of the season. However, in Nico Gonzalez, Guardiola sees a La Masia product capable of fulfilling either a box-to-box midfield role or a deeper, more defensive position, receiving possession from the back line.
While no agreement has been officially announced, negotiations are progressing positively, and City are optimistic about completing the transfer before the 11 PM deadline. It is understood that personal terms with Gonzalez are not expected to be a stumbling block.
