There was everything at stake here, as the Sardinians could climb out of the bottom three with a win, while the Nerazzurri needed a victory to keep the Scudetto race alive after Milan beat Atalanta 2-0.

Inter got the job done spanking Cagliari 3-1 but will now hope for the unlikely to happen on the final match day as they look to retain the Scudetto they won last season.

As Serie A Heads To The Final Match Day

To win the Scudetto, Milan need one point against Sassuolo to be sure of the Serie A title, as they have a superior head-to-head record with Inter.

The Scudetto goes down to the wire and will only be decided on the final day of the season. That is because the gap remains two points at the top, with Milan on 83 points and Inter 81.

If two sides finish level on points, they are separated in Serie A by their head-to-head record. That is in favour of Milan, who picked up a draw and a 2-1 victory in the Derby della Madonnina this season.

So Inter need to beat Sampdoria and hope Milan lose in their trip to Sassuolo.

Both Samp and Sassuolo have nothing more to play for, as the Blucerchiati saw their Serie A safety guaranteed this evening thanks to Inter’s victory away to Cagliari.

Those two games will be scheduled simultaneously to ensure neither side can gain an advantage by knowing the other result.

With Genoa and Venezia now relegated, the final place in Serie B will be decided between Salernitana and Cagliari on the last day of the season.

The Grifone were doomed after today’s 3-0 defeat to Napoli and Cagliari also losing 3-1 at home to Inter.

The league head into the final round with Salernitana on 31 points and Cagliari 29.

In Serie A, when two teams finish level on points in the table, their position is decided by head-to-head record.

As it happens, that is totally even between Salernitana and Cagliari, because they drew both matches 1-1.

With the goal difference in head-to-head also totally even, the next factor to divide them will be overall goal difference in the season.

On that score, Salernitana are in trouble, as their goal difference is -41 compared to Cagliari’s -34.

It means that a point might not be enough for Salernitana against Udinese, as if Cagliari in turn beat Venezia at the Stadio Penzo, they will both be on 32 points and the Sardinians stay in Serie A.
