Why AC Milan Are Hesitating On Zirkzee As Interest From England Grows

Written By Onyeka Daniel

It is well known that AC Milan remain the number one choice of Dutch striker, Joshua Zirkzee ahead of next season, but the Rossoneri are struggling to get the deal over the line. This could give other clubs the opportunity to sneak and grab him from their grasp.

More Details

The Italian giants have been left with a decision to make regarding the Bologna striker after the latest developments regarding commissions. As has been widely reported over the past few days, the Milan management have progressed to an advanced stage in the negotiations with his entourage.

The player is very much open to the move because he wants to stay in Italy, the Rossoneri have no problems paying his €40m release clause active from July 1 and the contractual details will not be an issue either. But that is where it all stops. According to reports, the discussions have reached a make-or-break point.

After suggestions that the gap on commissions was being reduced, Zirkzee’s agency have made it clear today that they will not budget on their €15m demands. If Milan want to close the operation they will be able to do so quickly because as mentioned the figure of the clause is known as is the striker’s salary.

Now, the final green light is awaited from Giorgio Furlani and the ownership to approve the overall €55m expense. The general feeling Is that blowing up the deal now would be counter-productive after two months of work.

However there is of course the more difficult issue of setting a precedent when it comes to commissions ahead of such an important window. On the other hand, English Premier League sides, Arsenal and Manchester united could be back in the frame for the player.

This is after their number one target, Benjamin Sesko decided to renew with RB Leipzig, rather than seek for a move elsewhere. Also, there’s the option of Jonathan Gimenez, Viktor Gyokeres and Jonathan David.

The Gunners in particular will want to try for Zirkzee and would have no problem paying his release clause and agent fee, they will only need to convince the player, so Milan will have to decide quickly or risk missing out.

Former Milan coach Stefano Pioli confirmed he was learning English with a view to the Premier League, but reportedly turned down Nottingham Forest this summer. The tactician saw his contract terminated by mutual consent after almost five years with the Rossoneri, in which he won the Serie A title and reached the Champions League semi-final.

But it was not one that particularly excited him. The club In question was believed to be Nottingham Forest, but Pioli would prefer to wait for a better offer to arrive.
