With Zirkzee And Gudmundsson Proving To Be Too Costly, Inter Milan Looking At Young Striker Referred To As The Next ‘Osimhen’

Written By Onyeka Daniel

With the Serie A title secured for this season, Inter Milan have already set their sight on starting a winning cycle, which is why they’re looking at several targets to strengthen the team while also looking to retain a core of this current team, going forward.

More Details

They are planning to sign a goalkeeper, (Bento), a centre-back (Jaja Bijol) a right wing-back (if Denzel Dumfries is sold) and also a striker. For the attack, several names have been floating around, with Joshua Zirkzee and Albert Gudmundsson the main ones.

But given the size of their budget, it would be a bit difficult to achieve that goal, which is why the club is already looking at alternatives. According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Inter have set their sights on George Ilenikhena, who is already called ‘the next Osimhen.’

The Nigeria-born striker who currently plays for Belgian side Royal Antwerp is one of Inter’s targets for next season, according to the report. Alexis Sanchez is one of the five Inter players expected to leave in the summer and the report claims that the Serie A champions are considering the promising striker as a possible replacement for the Chile international.

Ilenikhena was born in Lagos, Nigeria, on August 16, 2006, and has French citizenship as well. He scored 14 goals in 45 appearances across all competitions this season, including one against Barcelona in the Champions League group stage, and he became the second-youngest scorer in the competition after Ansu Fati.

He has played under Mark Van Bommel this season, and the Dutch coach is among the candidates to replace Stefano Pioli at Milan next season, so the pair may reunite in the next Derby della Madonnina in 2024-25. According to Gazzetta, Inter’s priority remains to sign Gudmundsson or Zirkzee this summer, and would probably look to offer some youngsters in the deal to lower the overall cost.

But Ilenikhena, who is also monitored by many other top clubs in Europe, remains an option for the Nerazzurri. Owing to his age, he can even be signed now and loaned out to another club to gain some experience before coming back to cement a place in the team in the future.

Multiple reports in Italy claim Inter are moving forward in the race for Brazilian keeper Bento who has given priority to the Nerazzurri, according to a recent report from Il Corriere dello Sport. The Brazilian keeper is open to joining Inter and has given priority to the newly crowned Serie A champions.

And the report claims that the asking price for the Brazil international is €20m and the same sum is confirmed by a different report from Gazzetta dello Sport. The report further has it that the Nerazzurri directors are ready to meet intermediaries for the Athletico Paranaense star and the Brazilian club’s directors to negotiate the financial side of the deal.

Gazzetta also reports that Bento is open to joining the Nerazzurri. The Brazilian keeper has already spoken about Inter with Julio Cesar, a 2010 treble winner at the Stadio Meazza, who has now become an agent. Inter are aware that some Premier League clubs are also interested in Bento, but Chelsea are not believed to be among the suitors, which is good news for them.
