World Champs: Gotytom Gebreslase Runs Fastest Time In Women Marathon Championship History

Ethiopia’s Gotytom Gebreslase paces her race perfectly to take the World Athletics Championship title in a personal best 2:18:11.

Gotytom Gebreselase emerged the World Champion in the women’s marathon, breaking the Championship Record (CR) set by Paula Radcliffe in 2005.
The 27-year-old almost took three minutes from Radcliffe’s 2:20:57 with her 2:18:11 to beat Judith Korir of Kenya who won Silver in 2:18:20.

In third, ex-Kenyan Lonah Salpeter of Israel clocked 2:20:18 as fourth-placed Nazret Weldu set an Eritrean record of 2:20:29.
“I am very happy and I want to give all the glory to God,” said Gebreslase, who became the first Ethiopian to win the women’s marathon since Mare Dibaba in 2015. “The Kenyan runner asked me to pass her, but I stayed patient. Towards 40km, I felt strong and decided to leave.
Unfortunately, 2019 champion, Ruth Chepngetich, from Kenya, was prominent up to around 18km but pulled out with stomach problems.

The Tokyo bronze medalist says her win was inspired by her male compatriot, Tamirat Tola who won the men’s marathon event on Sunday.
“Tola’s win yesterday motivated me a lot today,” Gebreslase said. “I did not know I was the first Ethiopian woman to win (the world title since 2015.

Gebreslase while speaking to the BBC after her win, broke down in tears wishing for a peaceful and better Ethiopia.
“I wish all Ethiopians to be victorious in everything. Women can all be winners when they work hard for themselves and for their countries.
“And I wish peace in my country, in all of Ethiopia.”
