Xabi Alonso: Dirk Kuyt Backs Bayer Leverkusen Coach To Replace Klopp At Liverpool
Written By Albert Echatah
Dirk Kuyt has endorsed his former Liverpool teammate to succeed Jurgen Klopp at Anfield.
More Details
With eight games remaining, Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen are yet to lose in the Bundesliga this season and lead Bayern Munich by a commanding ten points.
In addition, the Spanish squad is in the Europa League quarterfinals. There, they will play West Ham, and if both teams get to the final, they may play Liverpool in a highly anticipated match. For Alonso, who Liverpool believes is the best candidate to succeed Klopp when his nine-year career comes to an end at the end of the season, the match may act as the ultimate job interview.
If given the chance, Kuyt believes the Spaniard may succeed at Anfield and asserts that the player possesses managerial skills from his playing career.
‘Well, you know, if you look at former team-mates and players, sometimes you doubt they can become a coach and then you see them doing really well in a management job. But, for Xabi, I think in my mind definitely he was like a future coach,’ the Dutchman said in a wide-ranging interview with the Liverpool ECHO.
‘I followed him and the steps he made in his career. I think he did very steady to manage a couple of U23s teams but then he had his first opportunity at Bayer Leverkusen and I think it was the right step.
‘Now Xabi is there and I think people almost cannot believe that someone other than Bayern Munich are going to win the league. That shows the quality of a manager like Xabi Alonso.
‘People can say maybe it has come too quick but sometimes good things come very quickly and for me, definitely, he was always a guy during our playing time that was always thinking about the game; thinking tactically; talking always tactically outside of the pitch.’

Manchester United have announced that Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s official 27.7% takeover of the team in exchange for a £1.3 billion agreement has now been completed.
Ratcliffe said: ‘To become co-owner of Manchester United is a great honour and comes with great responsibility.
‘This marks the completion of the transaction, but just the beginning of our journey to take Manchester United back to the top of English, European and world football, with world-class facilities for our fans. Work to achieve those objectives will accelerate from today.’
