Spanish giants Barcelona have been plagued by injuries for the majority of the season, with the exception of a brief respite in February and March. Those issues reappeared in April with a fury.

More Details

Previously, Xavi Hernandez would have used the standard excuse of not being able to work with the players for an extended period of time. Gerard Pique and Sergio Dest have both failed to overcome muscular difficulties since returning from injury for the closing months of the season.

However, this only addresses a portion of the injury issues. Sport covered Xavi’s news conference ahead of Barcelona’s match against Real Mallorca, in which the Barcelona manager attempted to explain all of the injury difficulties in detail.

“Pedri injured himself in a match. Unfortunately for several weeks. He is feeling good and doing work on his own. Pique has beend ealing with his tendon for 2 or 3 months. Today he didn’t train, he started with the group. Today he was in more pain.”

“Roberto isn’t a relapse. The stitches are fine. It’s a muscular issue, nothing more. Nico broke his toe yesterday in a collision with Ansu during a match. It’s a shame because we need everyone. We aren’t blessed with a lot of central midfielders, but that’s football.”

“Then Oscar and Martin with Covid. Ousmane woke up with tonsilitis, we will tomorrow, he is crucial. Yesterday Sevilla slipped up, a direct rival. We have to be in the Champions League next year.”

On the plus side for Xavi, he was able to confirm that Ansu Fati would be back in the squad tomorrow, after being absent since January. There’s also a chance that Samuel Umtiti is declared fit too. Barcelona are six points clear of Real Betis in fifth place, but another home defeat to Mallorca would send alarm bells ringing at Camp Nou.

Meanwhile…

Paris Saint-Germain are putting pressure on Ousamane Dembélé to respond to their offer while the forward negotiates a possible contract renewal with FC Barcelona, according to the latest rumors.

PSG are offering 17 million euro net each season plus a signing fee to get the Frenchman to sign for them on a free transfer.

It’s understood Dembélé wants to remain at FC Barcelona if possible, but it’s clear the Catalans have no intention of matching those wages.

However, Barcelona is said to be preparing an improved offer to show him and his agent, Moussa Sissoko.
