Zack Steffen Agrees Terms To Join Colorado Rapids Immediately
Written by Patrick Echatah
Zack Steffen, goalkeeper for the USMNT and Manchester City, has reportedly reached an agreement to join the Colorado Rapids of Major League Soccer.
More Details
The 28-year-old goalkeeper was originally acquired by the defending Premier League winners in 2019 for a reported $7 million from Columbus Crew. Prior to that, Steffen was a standout player for the Major League Soccer team and the division’s Goalkeeper of the Year in 2018.
Steffen completed a loan with German team Fortuna Dusseldorf before joining Pep Guardiola’s first team. After a challenging time at Manchester City, he signed a short-term contract to join Middlesbrough on a temporary basis in the Championship.
Zack Steffen has been forced to consider his alternatives because there isn’t room in Manchester City’s goalkeeping lineup for this season and the player is still recuperating from a significant knee surgery that took place in the summer. A return to the United States now appears to be imminent.
Zack Steffen, the backup goalie for Manchester City, has been signed by the Colorado Rapids for a three-year deal with a four-year option, according Tom Bogert of The Athletic.
According to the report, the goalie for the USMNT has decided not to accept a slot as a “designated player,” which means he is not one of the three players who would be exempt from the salary cap. This can be accomplished by paying a transfer fee or by offering the player better earnings.
