Zinchenko Under Fire Over His ‘Sluggish’ Performance Against RC Lens – Report

Written by Albert Echatah

Oleksandr Zinchenko has come under fire from Martin Keown and Michael Owen after the Arsenal defender put up a ‘sluggish’ performance in Tuesday’s Champions League loss to Lens.

More Details

Despite gaining the lead on the evening against the French team, who are presently 15th in Ligue 1, the Gunners lost for the first time this season. Gabriel Jesus shot the ball into the bottom corner after Bukayo Saka made a quick turnover, but the visitors were brought back by an outstanding goal from Adrien Thomasson.

While Elye Wahi scored in the second half as Lens persevered to secure a 2-1 victory, Saka was forced out with an injury shortly after and is now questionable to play against Manchester City on Sunday.

Keown and Owen criticized the way in which Arsenal gave up the second goal in particular, pointing out how a simple one-two caused Zinchenko to slip out of position and let Przemyslaw Frankowski rush in from behind.

After that, the right back whipped in a low cross, which Wahi somehow managed to intercept inside the box and score. Keown was quite critical of the back line, especially Zinchenko’s contribution to the goal. Speaking on TNT Sports afterwards, he said: ‘I think Zinchenko just gets done, doesn’t he.

‘He goes in too much. For me, I’d have just waited for [the Lens player] to come on, I wouldn’t have thrown myself in there. Little one-two behind him, attacks the space.

Meanwhile…

Ivan Perisic of Tottenham has suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury less than a week before Sunday’s North London Derby against Arsenal.

The versatile Croatian has appeared as a substitute in each of Spurs’ five Premier League games so far this season and contributed an assist in the team’s thrilling 2-1 victory against Sheffield United the previous time out.

‘We can confirm that Ivan Perisic has suffered a complex Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injury in his right knee,’ Tottenham posted on Twitter.
