Written by Olaleye Oluwadamilola

La Liga opponents are interested in signing Marcos Alonso and Sergi Roberto when their contracts expire at Barcelona with the club willing to let them go as both players who are nearing the end of their deals are being watched by Atletico Madrid in anticipation of possible transfers.

More Details

According to reports, Barcelona is ready to allow Sergi Roberto and Marcos Alonso to depart at the end of the current campaign. Both players have seen little playing time at the Nou Camp this season and their contracts expiring in the summer and as per Football Espana, the club plans to release the two instead of signing them to long-term contracts.

Atletico Madrid is reportedly interested to capture both players after expressing interest in signing Alonso during the summer transfer window and as for Roberto who is already the “lowest-paid senior player in the side,” he may be able to stay with the team if he accepts a pay reduction as he is only 31 years old.

Xavi has not been as eager to play Alonso who only has made seven appearances this season, playing only once since October and has only played 299 minutes even though he made frequent appearances last season after moving to the Nou Camp eighteen months ago from Chelsea.

Roberto, who has played the same number of games but one minute more, is comparable. In a 3-2 triumph over Almeria, the 31-year-old proved his worth with a Man of the Match performance, scoring a brace to give Xavi’s team the three points.

According to reports, Barcelona wants to avoid paying Robert Lewandowski £5.2 million more when he enters his third season with the team in 2019. In the summer of 2022, the Polish striker agreed to a three-year contract worth £42.5 million with the option of a fourth with Barcelona, leaving Bayern Munich but in light of the club’s recent financial difficulties, he signed a deal that called for annual compensation increases.

He made £17.3 million in his debut season and is already making £22.5 million this year, with an additional £5.2 million coming in his third year.

However, given Lewandowski’s difficulties this season and Barcelona’s ongoing financial problems, Spanish publication SPORT claims that they are trying to halt his wage increase and see if they can modify his projected compensation for the upcoming season.

Despite scoring nine goals in 21 games in all competitions this season, Lewandowski’s form has been called into question. In his last five La Liga games, he has only managed one goal, and Barcelona is currently seven points behind leaders Girona.
