Inter: The Immediate And Future Plan For The Defence
Written By Onyeka Daniel
Following the injury suffered by Canadian winger, Tajon Buchanan, current Serie A champions, Inter Milan will be forced into making a signing for the defense during this summer transfer window because the former Club Brugge man is expected to be out for at least four to five months.
More Details
According to Inter’s sporting director, Piero Ausilio, the aim is to sign a player for the left side of the defense in their 3-man defense, narrowing down their search. The aim is to use Carlos Augusto exclusively as a cover for Federico Dimarco, rather than as an option to Alessandro Bastoni on the left of the defensive line, as he did in the 2023-24 season.

Consequently, there are several options that they’re reportedly looking at. According to Italian transfer expert, Gianluca Di Marzio, the free transfer market is a great opportunity, but there is also the option of a low cost transfer, hence, the trio of Mario Hermoso, Ricardo Rodriguez, and Lorenzo Pirola are the top names.
For Hermoso, the Spanish international is one of the most high profile players available on a free transfer this summer. His contract with Atletico Madrid expired at the end of last month, and while he is the top choice of the manger, his huge salary demand, (around €4m) is considered too high for someone that is set to play backup.
However, the 29-year-old is not the only defender available on a free transfer this summer.Former AC Milan and Torino defender, Ricardo Rodriguez is also available and would represent a lower-cost signing to cover the defense, should cost around €2m in salary, and lesser sign-on fee too.
Also, the club could look to bring back one of their former players, Pirola from Salernitana. Following their relegation, they would be open to selling him back to his former club for around €5m to €7m, while Inter will probably propose a loan plus option to sign offer, that is if they consider him.
While these names represent immediate solution, the club is also looking at long term solutions, possibly replacements for the aging Francesco Acerbi (36-year-old) and Stefan De Vrij(32-year-old), according to a separate report from Il Giorno.

The club management is also exploring the free transfer market, which is why PSV defender Olivier Boscagli is a concrete solution. His current contract will expire at the end of the 2024-25 season and so far, it doesn’t look like he would sign a new contract with the Dutch side.
