Why It Will Be Difficult For Inter Milan To Sign Victor Roque In The Summer After Latest Report

Written By Onyeka Daniel

With approximately a month to the opening of the summer transfer window, rumors are already flying around with different players being linked with a move to different clubs and recently, there was a report on a transfer that seems to tick all the right boxes on the outside, but a closer look may turn out differently.

More Details

According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Barcelona striker Vitor Roque has been offered to newly crowned Serie A champions, Inter Milan, by his agent, but the Nerazzurri must decide whether to sign him or Albert Gudmundsson. Of course, the Nerazzurri are expected to sign a striker in the summer transfer window.

And the latest candidate linked with a move to the Stadio Meazza is 19-year-old Barcelona striker Vitor Roque. The Brazilian striker joined the La Liga giants for circa €40m plus add-ons in the January transfer window but has been struggling with playing time under Xavi and his agent has recently claimed that the striker could leave in the summer.

According to Gazzetta, Vitor Roque has been offered to Inter by his representative, but the Nerazzurri are still making their assessments. Vitor Roque would join the Nerazzurri on loan, while Genoa‘s Gudmundsson, their other target, is available on a permanent transfer worth at least €30m.

According to Gazzetta, Inter are planning to sell Marko Arnautovic and sign a new forward, but a final decision on who will bolster Simone Inzaghi’s options in attack hasn’t yet been made. While this transfer seems straightforward, it’s not as easy as it seems.

For one thing, his main reason for wanting a move away from Barcelona is because of lack of regular playing time, as Xavi seems to prefer Robert Lewandowski as his first choice striker, and at Inter, that would probably not change. Inzaghi already has his regular starter, Lautaro Martinez and Marcus Thuram and for the 2024-25 season, that order won’t change.

But whoever is coming in would definitely get their chances to play. With another attacking reinforcement coming, Mehdi Taremi, who is set to join the Nerazzurri on a free transfer from Porto, this means that there would be more competition upfront. So for the former Cruzeiro attacker, joining the Beneamata would not necessarily translate to regular playing time.

Unless Inter manage to sell Thuram in the summer, and even at that, Gudmundsson or Joshua Zirkzee will be a better option compared to him as they’re already familiar with the League. Furthermore, Barcelona would be less inclined to let a player that they spent €40m on to leave without any sort of compensation, even if it’s a loan deal.

Perhaps, this is a gambit by the player’s agent to get some clarity over his client’s future with the club and try to force the club to pick between him and Lewandowski. But there’s no denying that Victor Roque would be a perfect fit for Inzaghi’s two striker system.

Meanwhile…

The agent of Inter Milan linked defender, Agustin Giay believes the 20-year-old is already “the best wingback in South America.” The San Lorenzo player’s agent Leo Rodriguez spoke to FCInterNews in a recent interview, and gave his thoughts on his client’s potential, and on the possibility of a move to Europe.

Inter are always keeping an eye out for players capable of playing in the wingback roles. Those wide positions have been a key part of the Nerazzurri’s system for the last five years. Having attack-minded wide players with pace and a certain sense of timing in the final third is important for Inzaghi. And therefore, a key part of Inter’s transfer strategy for the past several years has involved scouting players for those positions.

This summer, it could be at right-wingback that the Nerazzurri will make a signing. Denzel Dumfries could reportedly leave Inter if he does not sign a new contract. Therefore, Inter’s search for a right-sided wingback is ongoing. One player who has been linked to Inter recently is San Lorenzo wingback Giay.

Alongside names like Michael Kayode, Aaron Wan Bissaka, Yukinari Sugarawa and most recently, Salzburg’s Amar Dedic. For Giay, the 20-year-old has reportedly been scouted by Nerazzurri Assistant Sporting Director Dario Baccin. Baccin tends to be the man who heads up Inter’s scouting operation when it comes to South American players.

Giay’s agent said that “We’re talking about a young player who’s already been a starter for his club for two straight years. “In addition to being the captain of the Under-20 and Under-17 teams. “He can play at right-back,” noted the agent Rodriguez. “And at wingback. In some matches, he’s even been used as an interior midfielder.

“For me he’s perfect as a wingback in Italian and European football,” he went on of Giay. “He is full of running. He’s very good in one-on-one situations. He has technical quality. “I hear from all the scouts and Sporting Directors that he’s the best wingback in South America,” added Rodriguez.

As far as where there is interest in Giay, Rodriguez was coy. “I don’t want to talk about a specific club,” the agent said. “There’s certainly no point hiding that some of the biggest clubs in Europe are following him, though. “At least seven teams in Italy,” said the agent. “And then four or five in Spain. Three in the Premier League.” He further added.
